Invisalign® FAQs

Do you have a question about Invisalign clear aligners? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one! Below are some of the most common questions our team gets asked about Invisalign treatment.

Does Invisalign really work?

Yes, Invisalign works, sometimes even faster than fixed braces! Each new set of aligners progressively moves the teeth in the proper direction prescribed by the Specialist Orthodontists at Ilam Orthodontics in their customised treatment plan just for you. The flexibility of the aligners provides the gentle force to move the teeth and does away with the need for metal brackets or wires. Over 9 million people worldwide have seen great results with Invisalign clear aligners, so contact us for an orthodontic consultation to discuss just how beautiful your smile could be.

Why should I choose an orthodontist to straighten my teeth?

Orthodontists are highly trained specialists in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of malocclusions to give their patients the best and most stable treatment results. Specialist Orthodontists have completed 5000 hours of orthodontic training while general dentists have only completed 80 hours of orthodontic study. You can trust in the expertise and experience of a Specialist Orthodontist.

An orthodontist treats hundreds of new cases every year and helps to straighten teeth and create beautiful smiles and facial profiles. A dentist may see only a small handful of cases per year in between drilling and filling. Due to this combination of specialised training and a tremendous amount of experience, orthodontists are more able to recognise the difference between a simple case and a complex one. When a case becomes more challenging, as they often do, orthodontists know what to do to properly handle any unexpected issues as they arise.

Is your team experienced using Invisalign?

Absolutely! In fact, we have been designated as Diamond Invisalign Providers, placing us among the top Invisalign providers in the world.

How much does Invisalign cost?

At Ilam Orthodontics, we provide each of our patients with a quote that is specific to their orthodontic treatment needs. This means we don't have one flat fee for Invisalign treatment, but rather you will only pay for the treatment that you require. We will provide you with this quote as part of your tailored treatment plan after your free Invisalign consultation.

What do I do if I've been elsewhere and I am told that I am not a candidate for Invisalign?

Come to Ilam Orthodontics for a second opinion! While Invisalign alone can't treat every case, every case can be treated with a combination of traditional braces (for a very short period) and Invisalign. Wearing braces for the small things that Invisalign can't do for three-to-six months is still better than braces for 18-24 months! Usually, these braces are in the back where they can't be seen anyway!

What do I do if I've been elsewhere and I am concerned with the fees quoted for Invisalign by a dentist?

While Invisalign treatment costs do vary it has been our experience that our fees are extremely competitive and are all-inclusive with no hidden extras. We also include a free 12-month follow-up for all our Invisalign treatments.

How long does Invisalign take and how much does it cost?

Your treatment time will depend on the complexity of your case, just as it does with traditional braces. However, in some cases, Invisalign treatment takes less time than with traditional braces. As for affordability, Ilam Orthodontics has flexible payment plans for Invisalign which include deposit and interest-free progress payments.

Does Invisalign treatment hurt?

Just like when braces are adjusted, most patients will experience some mild tooth soreness for a few days after each new set of aligners. This is normal and means your teeth are gradually moving in the desired direction. The soreness will gradually go away a few days after each new set of aligners are worn. Overall, the discomfort is usually less than with traditional braces.

How often must aligners be worn?

Invisalign aligners only work when they are worn. We recommend they be worn all the time except when eating, brushing or flossing, or for rare special occasions. It is best to wear your aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day or as directed by our orthodontists.

How often will I need to visit my Invisalign specialist throughout the treatment?

You will need to attend regular progress appointments every 12-14 weeks to make sure your treatment is going as planned. Our Dental Monitoring program for Invisalign treatment can reduce the number of in-clinic appointments needed throughout your treatment. You can learn more on our Dental Monitoring page, or inquire about it during your appointment with us.

Will the aligners fall off while I'm sleeping?

Invisalign aligners are designed to fit your teeth snugly and never fall out – even while you are sleeping, talking or laughing – so this shouldn’t be cause for concern.

Are there restrictions on what I can eat?

No. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed. There's no need to avoid certain foods for fear of breaking a wire or brace.

Will wearing Invisalign affect my speech?

Similar to other orthodontic treatments, Invisalign aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two. As your tongue gets used to the aligners, any lisp should quickly disappear.

Does Invisalign work with veneers?

Yes, you can still benefit from Invisalign if you have veneers. They shouldn’t affect your treatment.

Can I get Invisalign if I have bridgework?

Yes! Because of how Invisalign works, your orthodontist can choose not to move bridgework and avoid any complications.

How are Invisalign aligners made?

First, precise 3D scans are taken of your teeth. Then your orthodontist will send these scans, along with your customised treatment plan, to Align Technology. Using advanced 3D computer imaging technology, Invisalign system depict your complete treatment plan and sequencing, from the initial position of your teeth to their final desired position. Then, a series of virtually invisible thermoplastic aligners are custom-made for your teeth - and your teeth only - to move them little by little.

Each aligner is worn for 5-14 days before being replaced by the next in the series until the final position of your teeth is achieved. Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by the orthodontist based on your specific needs and treatment goals.
